As a family and senior photographer in the DMV area, one of the most important parts of crafting a meaningful session is choosing the right location. Where we shoot can completely change the energy of a session—it can reflect a client’s style, bring out their personality, and add that extra layer of beauty and depth to every photo.

I’m always looking for places that help my clients not only look amazing (hello, golden light and stunning backdrops!) but also feel amazing. From architectural gems to urban vibes to natural beauty, these are my favorite go-to spots in the Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia area that guarantee a memorable, wicked good experience:

🌿 Fort Washington Park (Maryland)

Historic meets scenic. Fort Washington Park is perfect for families and seniors who love open skies, riverside views, and unique stone architecture. The old fort structure gives a rustic yet regal vibe, and the expansive green space makes it a peaceful location for laid-back, natural portraits.

📸 Why I love it: The mix of history and nature makes every session feel like a storybook.

🏛️ CityCenterDC + Jefferson Columns (Washington, DC)

Want a modern-meets-classic aesthetic? CityCenter brings sleek, urban energy—great for seniors who want a stylish, editorial vibe. Pair it with the timeless Jefferson Columns for those iconic DC architectural shots that never go out of style.

📸 Why I love it: It's the best of both worlds: bold city lines and elegant history in one shoot.

🎨 Smithsonian African Art Museum (National Mall, DC)

Art lovers and culture enthusiasts will feel right at home here. The museum’s stunning modern design and cultural richness add visual depth and meaning to a session.

📸 Why I love it: Unique backdrops and powerful energy—especially beautiful in golden hour light.

Maman Café (DC)

This cozy-chic café is a dream for lifestyle sessions. Think soft lighting, beautiful interiors, and the warm, candid moments captured over a latte. It's great for senior sessions with a personal, editorial feel or relaxed family shoots.

📸 Why I love it: It’s a vibe. The aesthetic is warm, charming, and super photogenic.

🛍️ Union Market (DC)

For bold color, murals, and trendy urban energy—Union Market delivers. It’s perfect for seniors looking to express personality and style. Plus, there’s so much texture: from concrete walls to pop art murals and industrial elements.

📸 Why I love it: This spot is full of personality. Every corner is a new backdrop.

🎡 National Harbor (Maryland)

Waterfront views, the Ferris wheel, colorful boats, and plenty of open space make National Harbor a family favorite. It’s ideal for fun, movement, and bright, joyful images.

📸 Why I love it: There’s something playful about shooting here—it brings out natural smiles every time.

🖼️ Smithsonian American Art Museum & National Portrait Gallery (DC)

This one’s a hidden gem. The grand interiors, art-filled corridors, and architectural details are a dream come true for more formal or artistic sessions.

📸 Why I love it: Elegant, quiet, and full of storytelling potential. Also, air-conditioned and weatherproof!

🌿 Kogod Courtyard at the National Portrait Gallery

Located right between the American Art Museum and Portrait Gallery, this massive glass-covered space is magic. The natural light, the sleek water features, the garden elements—it’s like a modern conservatory in the heart of the city.

📸 Why I love it: It’s beautiful year-round. Rain, shine, winter, or summer—it always looks amazing.

Bonus: The café inside the courtyard is perfect for post-session treats or lifestyle shots with coffee in hand.

Final Thoughts

When choosing a session location, it’s about more than just the background—it’s about how it makes you feel. These spots across DC, Maryland, and Virginia are my absolute favorites because they bring out the best in my clients and give us the chance to create something truly special.
