Outdoor vs. In-Studio Family Photography: Which Is Right for Your Family?
Between trying to figure out what to make for dinner every night, driving your kids to school, and practice, and maybe to sporting events, making sure everyone has clean (or hopefully mostly clean!) clothes, and keeping up with all the other things that come with being a parent, life gets super duper BUSY.
So, the fact that you're even thinking about making time for family photos deserves a little credit! I give you Kudos!!!
In my mind, it's super wonderful!! And here's the thing: it's not just important, it's really special. These are the photographs your children will look back on years from now. They'll get to see just how they were, small and young, remember those fun times, and have something that grounds them. Memories and moments captured in pictures helps give you a sense of who you are and allows you, especially your kids, to look forward, comfortably.
So, if you're reading this and thinking, "Yes! I really need to get some family photos done," I'm here to help make it happen. And I'll walk you through the whole process!
As a Fort Washington, Maryland and DMV area family photographer, I want your family session to feel less like another thing on your to-do list and more like a stress-free activity to enjoy together.
Whether we're outdoors or in the studio, my goal is to capture your family's personalities, connections, and all those little moments that make your family.... YOUR family.
An outdoor family session gives us room to move around, explore, play, and enjoy the surroundings. An in-studio session offers a simpler setting where the focus is on your family, without the great outdoors as a backdrop. Some might think of that as a distraction. Well, there are a couple of ways to view this mini debate.
Let's break down the differences so you can decide which setting feels right for your family. And I'll put this out there right from the start: weather can definitely be a deciding factor! URG!!!
What Is an Outdoor Family Session Like?
Outdoor family sessions are all about capturing your family in a beautiful setting around the DMV area. I love incorporating movement, interaction, and those in-between moments that happen when everyone gets to relax and enjoy being together.
Think walking, holding and swinging hands, your kids running toward you, playing in a park and interacting, and those cool, fun, sweet, moments that you're likely to have in the fresh air moments.
Of course, we'll also make time for some classic family portraits with everyone looking at the camera. Those are the ones I love getting, and that parents and grandparents love having framed and hanging on the walls!
One of the things I love about outdoor family photography are the colors and character that the surroundings bring to your images. Beautiful natural light, interesting backgrounds, and the changing seasons all add something special.
My goal is to create a gallery that tells your family's story. Not just what everyone looked like, but what this particular season of life felt like. Sometimes, bringing in a little of the beauty of the outdoors is the perfect way to do that.
What Is an In-Studio Family Session Like?
If you love a clean, classic look, an in-studio family session might be just what you're looking for!
Being in a studio has a timeless quality that keeps the focus right: on your family. With a simple backdrop and fewer nature related aspects, your expressions, personalities, clothing, and connections really stand out.
Studio sessions don't mean that everyone has to sit perfectly still and be overly formal! There can be plenty of fun, laughs, and being naturally the family you are.
One of the biggest and best thing about an in-studio session? No worrying about the weather! We don't have to think about rain, wind, falling temperatures, or whether the sun is cooperating.
The studios I rent typically offer a simple white wall or backdrop, along with furniture that we can incorporate.
I love the simplicity of studio portraits. They're classic, beautiful, and a wonderful way to create photographs you'll enjoy displaying in your home or putting together in a family album.
Why Document Your Family Now?
Plain and simple answer....Because this version of your family won't last forever.
I definitely can attest to this. My kids grew up before I realized it. Your kids are growing, changing, and reaching new milestones before you know it. Your today... will eventually look different, and those little things you sometimes take for granted will become the memories you wish you could revisit.
It's easy to say you'll schedule family photos when things slow down or when you have a little more time.
But here's my take: You don't have to wait for life to slow down to document it.
In fact, these are exactly the moments worth capturing!
Your kids don't need to be perfectly behaved, in fact...it's best to be comfortable and yourselves. Everyone doesn't need to have a matching outfit. Your family definitely doesn't need anything but to just be.
I want to capture your family as you are right now. The the personalities, connecting, laughing, and all the little things that make your family special.
