It’s officially grad season—and one of the most exciting times of the year to capture such a major milestone. Whether you’re finishing high school or college, this moment deserves to be documented in a way that feels personal and true to you.

Recently, I had the chance to photograph a college graduate at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia—a perfect reminder of how meaningful it is to shoot in a location that reflects your journey. That said, the DMV area is full of incredible campuses and schools, each offering its own unique backdrop and vibe.

When Should You Schedule Your Senior or Grad Photos?

Timing can make a big difference in how relaxed and enjoyable your session feels.

College Graduates:

Plan your session about 4–8 weeks before graduation. This gives you time to use your images for announcements, celebrations, and avoids the heavy crowds that come closer to commencement.

High School Seniors:

The best time is typically:

  • Late spring of junior year through early fall of senior year

  • Fall sessions are especially popular for yearbook deadlines and mild weather

Booking early also ensures better availability during this busy season.

🎓 Not Just College Grads…

While this was a college graduation session, I also photograph high school seniors! The same approach applies—capturing personality, milestones, and that “next chapter” energy.

Choosing the Right Time of Day

Lighting plays a huge role in the final look of your photos:

  • Golden hour (sunrise or sunset): soft, flattering light

  • Morning sessions: quieter locations, less foot traffic. I usually do session in the later afternoon. I like the look and feel more.

  • Evenings: warm tones and a more relaxed feel.

    Make It Personal

No matter where your session takes place—whether it’s a college campus, local park, or your high school—what matters most is that it reflects you.

Bring along:

  • Cap & gown

  • Cords, stoles, or medals

  • A second outfit

  • Personal touches that tell your story

Finally

The DMV is full of amazing locations for senior and graduation sessions, and every school has something unique to offer. The key is planning ahead and choosing a setting that feels meaningful to your experience.

Grad season goes by fast—but the photos will last for years to come.
