Family photos are more than just pictures — they’re treasured keepsakes that tell your story for generations. But preparing for a family photo session can feel overwhelming. What should you wear? How do you keep the kids happy? What if the weather changes? As a photographer in the Maryland,Virginia, and Washington DC area all I can say is that it preparing will help you have a smooth and beautifully fun session with your family. But you don't have to do it alone. I'm here to provide some insights and guide you through. Here's a helpful guide as well!!!

Don’t worry! Whether it’s your first session or you're a seasoned pro, these tips will help you feel confident and fully prepared. So I'm directing my attention to the primary driver and person who coordinates with the photographer. Keep in mind that this info should be relayed to everyone who is going to be involved in the session. And please mom relax. Just share the info and don't stress over making the look and what everyone wears look perfect. The objective is to have an enjoyable time and the plan is to make memories.

1. Plan Your Outfits in Advance

Coordinated doesn’t mean matching. Choose a color palette of 3–4 complementary colors and build everyone’s outfits around it. Think textures, layers, and timeless styles. Avoid logos, graphics, and neon colors that can be distracting.

Tips:

  • You can start with the primary's, for example, mom’s outfit, and build from there.

  • Neutral tones (blush, cream, gray, soft blues) photograph beautifully. Stay light and bright provides an elevated look.

  • Lay out all the outfits together ahead of time to see how they flow.

2. Pick the Right Time of Day

Lighting is everything in photography. The best natural light happens during the “golden hour” — about an hour after sunrise or before sunset.

Consider:

  • Nap schedules for younger kids (avoid cranky hour!).

  • Weekday evenings may be less rushed than weekends.

3. Choose a Location That Fits Your Family's Personality

Just know that your photographer/I can help you select a location that fits your style — whether it’s a lush park, cozy in-home session, urban backdrop, or a waterfront at sunset.

Questions to ask:

  • Do you want a more posed or candid feel? I strive to keep it low key and casual and capture the real you.

  • Is the location accessible for all family members?

  • Are permits needed?

4. Prep the Kids (and Spouses!)

Talk to your kids ahead of time about what to expect. Keep the mood light and positive. Avoid pressure or vibes that can backfire — instead, frame it as a fun family adventure.

Tips:

  • If children are on the younger side, perhaps bring a favorite toy or comfort item for younger kids.

  • Keep snacks and water handy — especially for toddlers.

  • Hopefully the objective is to have positive vibes. Everyone should be on ready to enjoy the moments and tune in ready to show up.

5. Pack a Photo Session Survival Kit

Things happen — be prepared with a small bag of essentials:

  • Baby wipes (for faces, hands, clothes)

  • Hairbrush or comb

  • Lip balm or powder to reduce shine

  • Snacks & water. I sometimes have some things ready for my clients and guests but if you remember that would be great!

  • Tissues

  • Backup outfit for babies or toddlers (accidents happen!)

6. Trust Your Photographer and Let Go of Perfection

The best photos come from real moments — laughter, cuddles, even stuff going a little left. If melts down, that's fine! It can still be a magical moment. Authenticity is all good!!!

Let go of:

  • I'm not here for forcing smiles. I might ask but it's not directed

  • Worrying about dirty shoes or wrinkled clothes

  • It's a fun time, so being concerned and control every detail, lets just say that's not necessary

Instead, focus on being present with your family. The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will turn out.

7. Get a Good Night’s Sleep and Hydrate

It sounds like captain obvious and basic, but rest and hydration can do wonders for your skin, mood, and energy — especially for little ones. Start the in good mood and peace of mind will help in getting to a positive mindset...ready for more enjoyable experience.

8. Bonus: Bring Props or Personal Items (If It Fits the Vibe)

Want to add a personal touch? Think about what reflects your family.. Consider bringing a blanket for sitting, a favorite book for reading together, or a special item that reflects your family’s story. Keep it simple and meaningful.

Final Thoughts: It's About Connection, Not Perfection

Family photo sessions aren’t about stiff poses and perfect smiles — they’re about celebrating the love and connection between you. If you come prepared, stay flexible, and focus on enjoying your time together, your photos will reflect that beautifully.

Let go, have fun, and trust the process — because I love capturing photos that tell your story.
