Exploring the Great Outdoors
Summer is the perfect time for families to get outside and enjoy the bright sunshine in Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. Yes, it's been a tad hot this summer. But you can't deny that the freedom and longer days of summer make you feel that getting outdoors is a must!!! Whether you prefer the tranquility of nature or the excitement of local attractions, there’s something for everyone. There are so many parks, bike and walking paths, and waterfronts in the area where you can hike scenic trails and have a picnic surrounded by stunning views. Some of my favorite outdoor places include Fort Washington Park, Jones Point Park, National Harbor waterfront, and Union Market area. In terms of my favorite bike and walking paths, I love walking on the Alexandria, Virginia waterfront, as well as in DC at the Wharf or the Georgetown Waterfront.
Fun at the Museums
Washington D.C. has some of the best museums in the country, and summer is a great time to visit. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum is a favorite. You can see historic aircrafts, learn about space exploration, and first flights! Plus, many of the museums are free, making it an affordable family outing. And try to visit some of the art oriented museums as well. The architecture and ambience at the National Portrait Gallery is something special!!!
Summer Events and Festivals
During the summer months, Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. come alive with festivals and events perfect for families. Check out the National Mall’s Concert Series for free family-friendly music and entertainment. The Virginia Renaissance Fair is another great event offering a taste of the past with fun costumes, crafts, and delicious food. Other nice festivals include Hyattsville Festival, as well as festivals in Old Town and communities across the area. It's a fantastic way to immerse your family in history while enjoying a day full of excitement. If you love doing something a little different and appreciate being fully immersed in history, you may enjoy this.
Water Adventures
If your family is looking to cool off, there are several water activities to choose from! Spend a day at a water park or to keep it really simple, visit a local pool. I didn't realize how many local pools are available to spend some quality time with your kids. But there's been more than a couple times when I decided to just hop over to a pool whether in Maryland or Virginia. Yes this is quite a refreshing thing to do, especially since in this area travelling to a beach would be a fairly lengthy drive. This not only allows for physical activity but is also a great way to bond as a family while enjoying a serene day.
Local Farms and Wineries
Local farms or a vineyard are great places to visit during summer! Virginia has some beautiful wineries that often host family-friendly events. Take part in grape stomping or enjoy wine tastings while the kids explore the surrounding gardens. Alternatively, picking fresh fruits at a nearby farm is a great way to teach your kids where their food comes from while enjoying the sweet bounty of summer. I remember going to Miller Farms in Maryland to pick strawberries. I went with the hubby and my kids and enjoyed this great family outing.
Making Memories
Virginia and Washington D.C. and Maryland offer a myriad of summer activities that cater to families looking for fun and adventure. From outdoor activities and educational museum visits to cultural festivals and water sports, or an ordinary simple walk on the there’s always something to do. So, pack those lunches, grab your sunscreen, and make the most of this summer with your family. Capture every moment and create lasting memories!
