Mini Family Portrait Sessions: Quick, Classic, and Stress-Free

WHAT TO EXPECT

Mini sessions are straightforward, short and sweet. We’ll meet at a great DMV spot I’ve chosen for its fall colors and timeless backdrop. I’ll guide you with simple prompts so the photos feel classic without looking forced, and in just 10 minutes we should have everything we need. Then you can be on your way to enjoy the rest of your fall day. I also do mini sessions in a local DMV studio and we can have the same fun and excitement in a beautiful studio setting.

Because little kids can get uneasy or restless sometimes, these shorter sessions are a great fit—they’re efficient, relaxed, and still deliver beautiful results.

WHEN ARE MINI SESSIONS OFFERED?

I typically offer mini sessions once a year, most often in the fall. It's such a beautiful time of year for family portraits in Maryland, Virginia, and DC!

The fall colors, gorgeous light, and cooler temperatures make it one of my favorite seasons for photographing families. From time to time, I also offer in-studio mini sessions, which are a fun alternative to an outdoor setting and give your family a completely different look.

They're also timed perfectly for families who want updated portraits for holiday cards, gifts, or simply to have some new photographs to enjoy at home.

Since I only offer a limited number of mini sessions, they tend to fill up quickly!

WHAT TO WEAR

Choosing outfits for your mini session should feel easy. The goal is to look like yourselves — comfortable, coordinated, and timeless. More than anything, it’s important to feel comfortable and authentic to who you are! That said, here are some tips for those who appreciate some guidance:

Stick to neutral, muted tones
Earthy colors like cream, tan, rust, olive, and denim photograph beautifully in fall light and pair well with the natural surroundings. Avoid bright neons or logos that pull attention away from your family.

Coordinate, don’t match
Pick a general palette and let each person’s outfit vary slightly within it. If one person wears a pattern, balance it with solids on others. This keeps things cohesive without feeling overly planned.

Add layers and texture
Soft knits, cardigans, denim jackets, or cozy scarves add warmth and dimension. Just aim for a few simple layers rather than lots of competing patterns.

Dress for comfort and movement
Choose pieces that let everyone move freely and feel relaxed. Try outfits at home first — if they’re comfortable to sit, walk, and hug in, they’ll photograph beautifully.
