5 Questions to Ask Before Booking a Photographer in Maryland, DC, or Northern Virginia

Choosing the right photographer is about so much more than loving the photos on their Instagram feed. Whether you're planning family portraits, senior photos, branding images, maternity portraits, or celebrating another milestone, your photographer plays a big role in creating an experience you'll remember long after your session is over.

As a photographer serving clients throughout Maryland, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia, I believe every client should feel confident before they book. Asking the right questions ahead of time helps ensure you're choosing someone whose style, personality, and process are the right fit for you.

Here are five important questions to ask before booking your next photography session.

1. What is your photography style?

Every photographer has a unique style. Some photographers focus on natural, candid moments, while others prefer more traditional, posed portraits. Many photographers—including myself—love blending both approaches.

A mix of candid and guided poses often creates the most meaningful gallery because it captures genuine interactions while still ensuring everyone looks their best.

Before booking, browse through a photographer's portfolio and ask if their style matches the vision you have for your session.

2. Will you help me if I'm uncomfortable in front of the camera?

This is one of the biggest concerns I hear from clients.

The good news? You don't have to know how to pose.

A great photographer will guide you throughout your session—from where to place your hands to how to stand naturally and interact with your family. The goal is to help you feel relaxed, confident, and like yourself.

If you're worried about feeling awkward, don't hesitate to ask how your photographer directs clients during a session.

3. How long will it take to receive my photos?

Every photographer has a different editing workflow.

Some galleries are delivered in just a couple of weeks, while others may take several weeks depending on the season.

Knowing the turnaround time ahead of your session helps you plan accordingly, especially if you need your images for graduation announcements, holiday cards, business marketing, or a special event.

4. Are there any additional fees I should know about?

Before booking, it's always a good idea to understand what's included in your investment.

Some questions you may want to ask include:

  • Are digital images included?

  • Is there a travel fee?

  • What happens if I need to reschedule?

  • Is there a cancellation policy?

  • Are there late arrival fees?

  • Can I purchase additional images later?

Clear expectations help eliminate surprises and make the entire experience more enjoyable.

5. Do you help with planning my session?

A photography session begins long before the camera comes out.

Ask whether your photographer helps with:

  • Outfit recommendations

  • Choosing the perfect location

  • Planning the best time of day

  • Preparing children for the session

  • Tips to help everyone feel comfortable

The more guidance you receive beforehand, the smoother and more enjoyable your session will be.

Your Photographer Should Be More Than Someone Who Takes Photos

The right photographer isn't just someone with a great camera—they're someone who helps you feel comfortable, prepared, and confident every step of the way.

Whether you're booking family portraits, senior photos,

branding photography, or celebrating another milestone, don't be afraid to ask questions. A photographer who values your experience will always be happy to answer them.
